Ketchup Catsup Catch Up

I'm a little late in posting this, but last week I made homemade ketchup.
I know, awesome, right? And you're thinking, 'I didn't know you could make ketchup at home!'
Well, you can. And it is so crazy easy, you'll wonder why you haven't been doing it all along.

I didn't make up the recipe. I borrowed it from here.  One day I will actually make my own recipe to suit my own preferences, but for now, this recipe is pretty good.
Recipe below the fold...

Ingredients:
12 oz tomato paste
1/2 c dark brown sugar
1/2 t dry ground mustard
1/2 t kosher salt
1/2 scant tsp cinnamon
2 pinches ground clove
2 pinches allspice
1 pinch cayenne
2/3 c water
4 T white wine vinegar

Combine everything in a mixing bowl and stir until sugar is dissolved. I used my Kitchen Ninja to mix it up because I made homemade tomato paste and it wasn't as smooth as store-bought paste. The Ninja made everything play all nice in the bowl. It was awesome to watch!

Store your new ketchup love in an airtight container in the fridge (I used a ketchup container recently emptied and washed to store my homemade goodness) ....and let it sit overnight in the cool haven until the flavors meld before you use it.

If anything, this ketchup tasted a tad bit sweeter than the store-bought variety. So play with your recipe. Alter it to your liking and family's tastebuds. For pennies, you can have enough ketchup to satisfy even the most tomato-centric kid! (You know kids, they'll put ketchup on a cracker and call it lunch!)

  1. When you'd mentioned this on Facebook, I was really hoping you'd share the recipe. Thanks for doing so! We love ketchup, but I can't stand HFCS and it seems like even the ones without it don't taste the way they used to. (Couldn't be that martinis have killed my taste buds. Nah, that couldn't be it.)
